EBC Chola Pass Trek Overview

Everest Base Camp and Cho La Pass Trek is to explore high Mountains, Sherpa Culture, Buddhist religion, geography, flora and fauna of Sagarmatha National Park. Everest region is the home of Sherpa people and geographically unique region. We will pass the many Sherpa villages where we will get opportunity to learn their daily activities, people and culture.

In this trip we will see Buddhist monument, prayer flags, Stupas, Chortens, Monasteries, temples, prayer wheels and memorial places along the way. First we reach Everest Base Camp Trek then our trail diverts to another beautiful Gokyo valley. Merging together with the natural beauty of Himalayas and cultural ethos of the local Sherpa community, this trek creates the lifetime unforgettable memories.

EBC and Cho La pass trek starts with the thrilling and adventures short flight to Lukla from Kathmandu. We are going to explore UNESCO world heritage site Sagarmatha National Park. We will pass several villages, suspension bridges, rivers, forest and will rich the Kala Patthar at 5,550 m / 18,210 ft). Kala Patthar is the best view point for Mount Everest and panoramic Mountain View. We will have acclimatization day in Namche and Dingboche in this trip to make sure to succeed.

EBC Cho La Pass Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival in Kathmandu (1,400 m / 4,590 ft above sea level), transfer to hotel

Day 2: Fly to Lukla (2,840 m / 9,318 ft) trek to Phakding (2,610 m /8,563 ft) Distance: 8 km / 5 miles, Duration: 3 – 4 hours

Day 3: Phakding to Namche Bazaar (3,440 m /11,286 ft) Distance: 11 km / 7 miles, Duration: 5 – 6 hours

Day 4: Acclimatization day, Trek to Syangboche and back to Namche Bazaar, Duration: 4 – 5 hours

Day 5: Namche Bazaar to Tengboche (3,860 m / 12,664 ft) Distance:  10 km / 6 miles, Duration: 5 – 6 hours

Day 6: Tengboche to Dingboche (4,380 m / 14,370 ft) Distance:  9 km / 5.5 miles, Duration:  5 – 6 hours

Day 7:  Acclimatization day

Day 8:  Dingboche to Lobuche (4,910m / 16,109 ft) Distance:  7 km / 4.5 miles, Duration:  5-6 hours

Day 9: Lobuche to Everest Base Camp (5,364 m / 17,923 ft) then trek back to Gorak Shep (5,170 m / 16,962 ft) Distance: 13 km / 8.5 miles, Duration: 6 – 7 hours

Day 10:  Trek to Kala Patthar (5,550 m / 18,209 ft) then trek to Dzongla (4,830 m / 15,847 ft) Distance: 16 km / 10 miles, Duration: 7 – 8 hours

Day 11: Dzongla to Cho-la pass (5,420 m / 17,782 ft) and Dragnag (4,700 m / 15,420 ft) Distance:  10 km / 5.8 miles, Duration: 7 – 8 hours

Day 12: Dragnag to Gokyo (4,790 m/ 15,715 ft) Distance: 4 km / 2.5 miles, Duration: 3 – 4 hours

Day 13:  Gokyo to Gokyo-Ri (5,360 m / 17,585 ft) and trek down to Phortse Tenga (3,680 m / 12,073 ft) Distance: 17 km / 10.5 miles, Duration: 7 – 8 hours

Day 14: Phortse Tenga to Monju (2,840 m / 9,318 ft) Distance: 11 km / 6.8 miles, Duration: 6 – 7 hours

EBC Chola Pass Itinerary Detail

Day 1: Arrival in Kathmandu (1,400 m / 4,593 ft) and transfer to hotel

Welcome to Nepal Himalaya! We will meet at Kathmandu airport and transfer you to your hotel.The Kathmandu is a vibrant capital city of Nepal. You will observe the bustling streets and  alley with the aromas of local cuisine and the vibrant colors of traditional attire.

 

Day 2: Fly to Lukla (2,840 m / 9,318 ft) from Kathmandu or Manthali and trek to Phakding (2,610 m / 8,563 ft)

We will transfer to the Kathmandu airport to fly to Lukla. The flight offers fascinating views from the airplane windows. We start an easy hike to Phakding. We can see the beautiful mountain Kusum Kangaru from Thadokoshi village. We will pass through a beautiful valley, Sherpa villages, monasteries, Chortens, prayer flags, Mani, and a few mountains. Phakding is situated in the Dudh Kosi river valley. (Approximately 35 min fly and 3 hours trek)

 

The flight to Lukla will be rerouted from Manthali, Ramechhap in March, April, May, October and November due to traffic overcrowding in Kathmandu. To catch a flight from Manthali, we must leave around 2 a.m. from Kathmandu for scheduled departure from Manthali. (Approximately 5 hours drive, 20 min fly and 3 hours trek)

Day 3: Phakding to Namche Bazaar (3,440 m / 11,286 ft), Distance: 11 km / 7 miles, Duration: 5 - 6 hours

On this day, we will trek from Phakding through Monju, and end up in the big and beautiful town Namche Bazaar. The trekking trail follows along the Dudhkoshi River and enters Sagarmatha National Park. After crossing the bridge over Dudhkoshi River at the junction of Dudhkoshi River and Bhotekoshi River, the trail leads all the way up to Namche. Namche Bazaar has many big lodges, hotels, restaurants, bakeries, cafes, bookshops, trekking shops, souvenir shops, internet cafes, communication centers, post offices, laundry services, massage centers, airline sales agents, monasteries, museums, the National Park Headquarters, police offices, army posts, commercial banks, and a helipad.

Day 4: Acclimatization day, Hike to Syangboche and back to Namche Bazaar, Duration: 4-5 hours

Acclimatization is important before proceeding to higher elevations. Most trekkers spend two nights in Namche. On this day, we can visit Hotel Everest View located in Syangboche for panoramic mountain views, including Mt. Everest.

Day 5: Namche Bazaar to Tengboche (3,860 m / 12,664 ft), Distance: 10 km / 6 miles, Duration: 5 - 6 hours

The day begins with an easy, flat walk. The trail is full of beauty, including panoramic mountains, hills, villages, forests, rivers, and religious artifacts. Tengboche is located at 3,860 meters / 12660 feet above sea level. After reaching Tengboche, we can visit a very popular and large monastery where many monks chant and pray every morning and evening.

Day 6: Tengboche to Dingboche (4,380 m / 14,370 ft), Distance: 9 km / 5.5 miles, Duration: 5 - 6 hours

Today, we will descend through the rhododendron forest to Dingboche village. After crossing the Dudhkoshi River via a suspension bridge, the trail gradually ascends to Pangboche village, Somare village, and finally to the big Dingboche village. Along the way, we can enjoy views of many mountains, including Mt. Everest, and the charming shape of Mt. Ama Dablam. Although we cross the tree line today, local people in Dingboche grow potatoes, buckwheat, barley, and some vegetables.

Day 7: Acclimatization day

This is another day for acclimatization. We will hike uphill along the ridge and enjoy views of Mt. Makalu, other mountains, Chhukung village, the Imja Valley, and the beautiful landscape.

Day 8: Dingboche to Lobuche (4,910 m / 16,109 ft), Distance: 7 km / 4.5 miles, Duration: 5-6 hours

We will mostly walk on a flat trail up to Thugla. From Thugla, the trail becomes steep for about an hour before continuing on a flat path to Lobuche. Lobuche village is situated at the base of Lobuche peak and offers wonderful mountain views.

Day 9: Lobuche to Everest Base Camp (5,364 m / 17,923 ft) and back to Gorakshep (5,170 m / 16,962 ft), Distance: 16 km / 10 miles, Duration: 7-8 hours

Today will be a longer day of hiking due to the high altitude. The initial easy trail from Lobuche leads us to Gorakshep. After a short rest and some food in Gorakshep, we will continue our journey to the ultimate destination of Everest Base Camp. The trail to Everest Base Camp takes us through rocky dunes, moraines, and glacial debris. Along the way, we will see the Khumbu Glacier, Khumbu Icefall, and many towering mountains. We will return to Gorakshep for overnight stay.

Day 10: Trek to Kala Patthar (5,550 m / 18,209 ft) then trek to Dzongla (4,830 m / 15,847 ft) Distance: 16 km / 10 miles, Duration: 7 - 8 hours

We hike before down to Kala Patthar for glorious magnificent view with sunrise over Mt. Everest. Kala Patthar is the best and closer view point to capture amazing pictures of Everest and Khumbu (Mahalangur) Himalaya range. We will be back at Gorakshep for breakfast and head down to Dzongla. We will feel easier and comfortable for walking down.

Day 11: Dzongla to Cho La pass (5,420 m / 17,782 ft) and Dragnag (4,700 m / 15,420 ft) Distance: 10 km / 5.8 miles, Duration: 7 - 8 hours

Today is supposed to be the hardest day of this trip. The Cho La pass is not itself difficult, but it is steep and involves a glacier part on the eastern side. We need to be careful as the trail is vertical and the rocks glazed by ice may cause trouble by making the trail slippery. The North West trail from Dzongla climbs through a rocky, some crevasses and icy trail. We reach on the top of Cho La passing a frozen lake. After the top, the way is vertical descends to the Dragnag. Descending also may not be easy because of icy trail and rocky. Dragnag village lies on the bottom of big cliff.

Day 12: Dragnag to Gokyo (4,790 m/ 15,715 ft) Distance: 4 km / 2.5 miles, Duration: 3 - 4 hours

We trek through the Ngozumpa Glacier to the mountain on the other side. Ngozumpa Glacier is the biggest glacier of Nepal. After crossing the glacier we reach Gokyo. It will be a short hike today. We can walk to the forth lake after lunch.

Day 13: Gokyo to Gokyo-Ri (5,360 m / 17,585 ft) and trek down to Phortse Tenga (3,680 m / 12,073 ft) Distance: 17 km / 10.5 miles, Duration: 7 - 8 hours

Early n the morning we hike to Gokyo Ri for mountain and Gokyo valley view. We return back to Gokyo and after breakfast, descend to Phortse Tenga. The last part trail is rhododendron and pine forest.

Day 14: Phortse Tenga to Monju (2,840 m / 9,318 ft) Distance: 11 km / 6.8 miles, Duration: 6 - 7 hours

We climb 1:30 hour to Mom La hill and easy walk to Namche Bazaar. After Namche Bazaar we continue hike down to Monju. Today we exit from the Sagarmatha National Park.

Day 15: Monju to Lukla (2,840 m / 9,318 ft above sea level) Distance: 12 km/ 7.5 miles, Duration: 5 - 6 hours

We will trek to Lukla, passing through several local villages. We follow the Dudh Koshi River valley. Today is last night in the mountain. We may have last gathering with all trekking crew.

Day 16: Morning Flight from Lukla to Kathmandu, Daytime Free

We will fly back to Kathmandu, and you will be transferred to your hotel. You are free to rest after conquering the Himalayas.

Day 17: Departure to the International Airport

Today you can do last-minute shopping or other activities. We will drop you at the Kathmandu international airport 3 hours before your scheduled flight. We will say goodbye with happy memories and hope to see you again.

Q1: How difficult is Everest Base Camp and Cho La Pass Trek?

Everest Base Camp and Cho La Pass Trek is relatively harder and longer in duration than the Annapurna Base Camp Trek. It is because trekkers will be hiking to the ultimate heights at 5,550 m / 18,209 feet . Trekkers do not require technical training or rock climbing and mountaineering skills but you need to be physically fitness to hike 6 to 8 hours daily. Some physical fitness programs such as running, swimming, and hiking are recommended before your journey.

Q2: What is the best time to do the Everest Base Camp and Cho La Pass Trek?

The best months to do the Everest Base Camp and Cho La Pass Trek is February, March, April, May, September, October, November, and December. During these months, the weather is generally favorable with clear skies and mild temperatures, making for optimal trekking conditions and stunning mountain views.

Q3: Who are my Guides and Porters?

Our trekking guides are trained and hold a trekking guide license issued by the Nepalese government. All of our guides are local with a deep understanding of the mountains, culture, health and your safety. All of our guides are skilled, experienced, courteous and helpful. They are proficient in English and will be able to communicate effectively with you throughout the trip.

Q4: What type of Foods available during the trek?

You can get verity of meals including typical Nepali Dal Bhat (Rice, Curry and lentils), breads, noodles, soups, eggs, toast, potato varieties, pizza, pasta, burger items are common choices in the menu. Breakfast and dinner will be served from tea house or lodge where we stay overnight and lunch will be served on the way to next destination. Breakfast, lunch and dinner are included during the trek.

Q5: What about Drinking Water?

Bottled water, Boiled water or safe drinking water options are available along the trekking route. We do not recommend you drink water from local sources such as taps, wells, and rivers.

Q6: What types of Accommodations available?

You will be accommodated in 3 star level hotel in Kathmandu. During the trek, you will have a private room in guesthouses and lodges. In some cases, during peak season, you need to share a room with others.

Q7: Do I need Travel Insurance?

Yes, it is necessary to have insurance to join this EBC and Cho La Pass Trek. Your insurance should cover cost of Helicopter rescue and treatment.

Q8: Do I need Day Backpack?

Yes, while porters can carry the majority of your belongings, it’s recommended to carry a small day backpack yourself. This backpack can hold essentials such as drinking water, snacks, sunscreen, camera, sunglasses and any other items you may need easy access to during the day hike.

Q9: Is there Porter Luggage Limit?

Yes, trekkers should note that the luggage limit for a porter is 20kg, and typically, there is one porter assigned for every two trekkers. It’s advisable to pack efficiently and within this weight limit to ensure ease of transportation during the trek.
